It’s known that the jasmine flower and the essential oil obtained from it are used in cosmetics and perfumery because of its calmative, relaxing properties or as an aphrodisiac. That’s why the jasmine flower is so popular all around the world.

The most predominant color of the flower is white, but some of the species have the color of the flower yellow. The jasmine flower is native from Himalayas in western China.

This flower is part of the kingdom plantae, division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Lamiales, family Oleaceae and genus Jasminum.


The jasmine flower has 5 or 6 lobe petals and a strong sweet scent. Usually jasmines are cultivated for their shining leaves and beautiful clusters.

The flowering of the jasmine flower it usually takes place in the summer or spring, six months later after their planting. The fragrance of the jasmine flower it’s released in the night after the sun sets. Be careful because there are two types of Jasmines: true and false. The true Jasmine is part of the Oleaceae and is non-poisonous for the human body. The jasmine’s shrubs can have a height from 10 to 15 feet and it grows about 12 to 24 inches per year. A jasmine’s flower leaf shape is simple or trifoliate or pinnate with 5-9 leaflets. Usually, the jasmine flower has white flowers with the size of 1 inch.

The oil is usually made from two types of jasmine flower: Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum officinale and is used in high-quality perfumes, creams, oils, soaps and shampoos.

The perfect soil for growing a jasmine flower is a well moist one, well drained, with a moderate level of fertility. The place where you want to grow your jasmines should be warm, and full of sun with partial shade. Plant your jasmine bushes during June to November and when you plant them keep a distance of 8 feet in between not to cause a jamming trouble. To have a healthy plant you have to add leaf molds to the soil, fertilize it in the spring, water it very well in the summer and offer it a lot of sunlight, at least 4 hours a day.

The most important factors in taking care of a jasmine flower are: sunshine, fertilizer, soil and watering. You will have to remove all the plants that are near to your jasmine flower and fertilize the soil from time to time (potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen). You will have to irrigate the plant after you planted it, and then after every 7 to 10 days. Taking care of a jasmine is depending on if it’s indoor or outdoor. If you’re having jasmine in your home put it in your balcony to have minimum 4 to 6 hour of sun light.
